Reduce and Treat Waste Properly
Prepare well for leaving no waste

  • Precise estimation on food consumption reduces the loading and waste:

    • Replace disposable utensils with durable ones; and

    • Use towels instead of tissue paper or wet wipes for wiping sweat; use alcohol handrub instead of wet wipes for hands hygiene.

  • Select food with simple packaging, or repack the food with food container or sealed bags to reduce trash.

  • Avoid using disposable items, e.g.

    • Opt for simple dishes with little food waste;

    • Avoid grease or cook them with ingredients that absorb excess oil, reducing oil residue which minimizes the need of cleansing agents; and

    • Easily cooked food is preferred. Minimize fuel usage and reduce disposal of fuel containers.

Dispose of wastewater properly

  • Sieve food remains before disposing cooking water.

  • Dispose the water at wastewater collection facility, or away from water sources e.g. streams or reservoirs (recommendation: at least 60m).  Disperse the wastewater in a scattered manner. Avoid disposal at one point.

  • Use alcohol handrub instead of soap for washing hands; use salt for teeth brushing to reduce pollutant.

  • Use tea leaves, tea seed powder or hot water to remove oil from utensils. Avoid the use of chemical cleansing agent.

  • Chemicals of insect repellant or sunblock could cause pollution. Stay away from water sources if one has applied the mentioned chemicals.

Handle solid wastes

  • Make use of public toilets along the trail. Minimize human wastes in nature.

  • Put the used tissue paper or sanitary products in plastic bag with deodorizing agents (e.g. soda powder) and take them away when leaving.

  • Put leftover and human wastes in sealed plastic bags, or bags for specific purpose.  Take the waste away to avoid leaving visual impacts or odor which attracts wild animals.

  • Bring the trash back to the city even rubbish bins are available. Trash disposal in urban area is preferred.

  • If the mentioned methods are not applicable, one may consider burying the food remains and human wastes in cat holes

  • Yet according to the Hong Kong Laws Regulation no. 8 under CAP 208A (Country Park & Special Areas Regulations), no one (unless permitted) can dig, excavate or disturb the soil within country parks or special areas. One should pay attention where cat holes can be applied and respect the law.
